The People’s Republic of Art

“Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity!” Thoreau’s signature mantra still resonates. In fact, 150 years after the fact, the exhortation still has the ring of the revolutionary about it. (Although one has to wonder why he said it three times, when saying it once would have been so much simpler.) And who has taken that stripped-down philosophy more to heart than that unsung molder and mirror of online reality, the ASCII artist? Space vehicles, cartoon monsters, B-grade celebs—whatever the subject matter, the whimsical, raw, keystroke results are always weirdly comforting.
