Their corporations have given
large amounts of cash in support of the arts—in some cases as much as $85.3
million. Now Rob Conger pays homage, in
the form of latch-hook rug portraits, to the nine CEO’s of the most
philanthropic companies in 2001. Like a Velazquez for the 21st century, Conger
immortalizes these men, trading oil paint for oil-based acrylic yarn.
In
the end, Conger is making a blatant effort to sell each of these portraits in
the hope that the proceeds can fund the creation of a larger rug to be offered
as a donation to Bob Ulrich, CEO of Target, the most philanthropic company in
2002 according to Forbes. This will serve as thanks and recognition for
Ulrich¿s part in his organization’s philanthropic efforts, turning the typical
structure of patron/artist on its head.
