Honeymoon Antiques, Ltd.
105 Avenue B
NYC
10009
(212) 477-8768

New York’s Lower East Side is full of vintage shops, but Honeymoon stands out. Stocked with care, it features some of the coolest retro gear around. Go loud and proud with a floor-length Pucci dress, get funky with a leather trench coat, or mix-and-match your own personal style. Honeymoon also sells coveted items such as Playgirl magazine clutch purses, vintage designer shoes, and Enid Collins handbags. Call before dropping by—their hours are a little haphazard.
The Hispanic Society of America
Broadway between 155th and 156th
NYC
(212) 926-2234
Hispanic Society Museum

This is one of those New York museums that so often gets overlooked by visitors and New Yorkers, alike—which is a shame, as inside are marvelous works of art from Spain, Latin America, and Portugal. Masters like Velazquez and Goya are well-repesented; among the latter’s works is a celebrated portrait of the Duchess of Alba. The Society’s courtyard is also a great place to read, draw, or just soak up the atmosphere.
Magasin
505 West 23rd Street
NYC
10011
(626) 729-4692

A small space abounding with taste and style, the brand new Chelsea design shop Magasin is filled with vintage items peacefully co-existing with contemporary pieces—yet more proof that you can, in fact, live comfortably with design. Proprietor Jerome Thenot, a designer and architect himself, plans on featuring pieces by emerging designers. Also, an extra room in the shop will soon be serving as a showcase for the renowned talents of mosaicist Pierre Mesguich.
Pearl River Mart
277 Canal Street (at Broadway)
New York City
(212) 431-4770

Yeah, people know about this store as the place to buy Asian-themed souvenirs and household items like kung-fu shoes, silky purses, sushi dinner plates, and scissors of every conceivable size and shape. But Pearl River’s also one of the best bets in the city if you’re browsing for unusual, quality paper. Look for the folded sheets of colored, fibrous stock—you never know what hues are going to be available at any given time, which of course is part of the fun.
Save-a-Thon
411 Bridge Street
Brooklyn, NY
(718) 852-5757

Save-a-Thon is the coolest arts and crafts store (and probably the biggest and the cheapest) you’re likely to find in the NYC area. It’s crammed full of glittery glue sticks, yards of clearance fabric, plain hair barrettes, and plastic baubles. There’s also a good selection of sewing machines for reasonable prices, they do repair work, and they have a really knowledgeable staff. But be prepared for some real old-school New York attitude from some of the people there—apparently they haven’t heard that the Big Apple’s a polite place nowadays.
