Scott White and Bruce Churchill live in the Back Bay in Boston, MA.
Bruce is a family physician at Harvard University. Scott’s work in marketing and
communication spans a number of industries, including professional services,
manufacturing, and non-profits.
What do you collect?
Scott:
Mostly we collect contemporary paintings. A lot of the work we have is either
figurative or representational, and most of it is on canvas or wood. We have
several black and white photographs that Bruce’s brother shot and recently
bought one taken by a friend. We tend to buy work from emerging artists and
prefer to have some level of contact with the artist.
What did your
first collection consist of?
Bruce: I started with postage
stamps.
Scott: I collected baseball cards. Both of our first collections
are probably worth some money now, but they’re in shoeboxes somewhere in our
parents’ basements.
Why do you collect?
Bruce: For a variety
of reasons. We tend to travel a lot, and we get to see cities from different
viewpoints when we structure trips around galleries.
How do you
collect?
Scott: I tend to buy more on impulse. Viscerally. A piece has to
hit us in the right way, and we feel compelled to buy it before we leave.
Bruce: The one time we left a gallery to think over a painting, we
returned within ten minutes and a guy was leaving with ourpainting bubble
wrapped under his arm.
